The 2024 general elections in Ghana, held on December 7, marked a significant chapter in the country’s democratic journey. The elections were hotly contested, featuring key candidates John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). With a vibrant political atmosphere and high voter turnout, the Electoral Commission declared John Mahama the President-elect after securing a decisive victory.


Presidential Race


John Dramani Mahama won the presidency with a notable margin, garnering substantial votes across key regions such as Greater Accra, Northern, and Volta. His campaign emphasized economic recovery, youth employment, and national unity. Meanwhile, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and the NPP retained a stronghold in the Ashanti and Eastern regions but could not secure enough nationwide support to stay in power.


Parliamentary Elections


The NDC also made gains in Parliament, flipping several constituencies, including Abura Asebu-Kwamankese, where Felix Kwakye Ofosu won by over 11,000 votes. Additionally, notable wins included John Dumelo in Ayawaso West Wuogon, unseating Lydia Alhassan in a closely watched race.


Challenges and Highlights


The elections were not without challenges. Reports emerged of power outages at polling stations, requiring voters to use torchlights to assist in the vote count. Allegations of intercepted ballot papers in the Ashanti Region and tensions between political agents added to the drama of election day.

This election reinforced Ghana’s democratic resilience and the readiness of citizens to hold leaders accountable. The peaceful transfer of power, as always, remains a hallmark of Ghana's democracy.
